The Product

The Safety Barrier required when working on the Platform Edge to change coping stones.

Employees that perform engineering work replacing the platform coping stones, must be able to work in total safety.  Conventional Barriers  attached by a ‘G’clamp to the coping stones, have to be removed when replacing the coping stones, therefore the workforce are ‘unprotected’ whilst working in this area.  The  Rail Safety Systems BV Safety Barrier protects the area being worked and the workforce  from the track on which trains are still running and prevents operatives from ‘falling -off’ the platform.

The RSS Railway Safety System has been tested by HHC/DRS Inspecties B.V. and certified to EN 13374 (Class A), the industry directive RLN0077-V004 July 2010 and the Health & Safety regulation 3.16 of The Netherlands Ministry of Social Affairs & Employment.

Stanchions made of high-quality galvanized steel.

How does the Platform Edge Protection Safety Barrier work?

Erecting the system is a matter of a few steps:

1.Remove some ballast about 50mm wide across the full width of the bottom flange of the rail.
2.The bottom ‘rail fixing bracket’ is in two halves – take the half with the longer projection and slide onto the rail with the portion to accept the vertical upright towards the platform.
3. On the other side of the rail, slide the other piece into the ‘groove’ formed by the vertical plates and fix – using a bolt.
4. Take the Upright with the braced corner – slide into the vertical uprights on the platform side of the ‘rail fixing bracket’, adjust the distance and secure in position with the fixings provided.
5. Take the next vertical upright with the handrail clips pointing towards the platform and slide into the existing upright and adjust and fix.
6. Repeat from step 1, fixing the next rail bracket onto the bottom flange of the rail at about 3m – it will depend on sleeper distances whether it is 4 or 5 sleepers.
7. Place the GRP handrail tube in the holders and attach the next tube with the patented interlocking system.
8. Repeat the steps above until the entire length of the working area has been secured.

The Benefits

Benefits of the RSS Magnetically Attached Safety Barrier

  • Consists of few components. No loose No tools needed
  • Certified to EN 13374 (Class A), World Patented.
  • Stanchions placed at 3m intervals, twice the distance of conventional barriers.
  • Little ballast is removed, operatives are not required to go into the 4’00”.
  • No danger of damaging underground signalling cables.
  • Does NOT affect track circuits or Axle counters.
  • Can be used in areas with S & C.
  • No major ballast removal/replacement major savings in working and possession costs
  • Safe quick assembly/disassembly,
  • In a Safe System of work, 102m can be erected in 30 minutes.
  • Can be used in freezing temperatures (-20oC) or high temperatures (+80oC) when ‘track distortion’ is an issue.

It is easy to use and will be used!
